I'd really like to cosplay again, regardless of being a size 24. I was thinking of Mei-Rin or Madam Red from Kuroshitsuji to go with my brother's R-Shitei Grell cosplay. I figure, if he is willing to wax his entire body and wear ladies lingerie in public the least I can do is cosplay with him in a full dress. My sewing skills are not the most fantastic however, though I am very creative! How hard is it really to sew a gathered/ ruffled gown? And do plus sized bodies pose any specific challenges?
Hi! I’m glad you’re thinking of cosplaying again! :) Haha, props to your brother for being willing to wax his entire body and wear ladies lingerie in public!! The things we do for cosplay, right?? Well, I’ve looked at both characters. For a novice sewer, Mei-Rin looks a lot simpler. You could easily find a pattern at your local fabric store that would look, if not exactly like that, close enough to be able to alter it quite easily. That’s what I usually do in my forays into sewing because I’m not a great seamstress either. I find patterns that I can alter slightly. I’ll only draft my own if it’s something very simple, like a circle skirt or harem pants or something. However, if you really want to do Madam Red, there are costuming patterns out there that might be pretty similar as well. So, how hard is it to sew a gathered/ruffled gown? Depends on how complicated the pattern is, what materials your working with, etc. Here’s my advice:
1) Start as early as possible. Give yourself time to mess it up. :)
2) Ask for help! If you have friends who are accomplished with sewing, ask them for advice! If not, whoever is working at whatever store you buy your fabric and patterns from will usually give you advice. You can even keep going back as you work on it and bring in what you’ve got! Also, sites like cosplayisland and cosplay . com have a lot of tutorials! They’ll help you out, too!
3) Try to find patterns! They make things a lot easier if you’re not a sewing prodigy. I’m certainly not, haha.
And, the second question! Do plus sized bodies pose any specific challenges. Eh, somewhat. Sometimes it’s harder to find patterns in larger sizes. But there are ways to make patterns larger or smaller. It can be a bit difficult, and you want to keep your measurements in mind as you alter it. But it can indeed be done. If your feet are big like mine, shoes can be a challenge, too. The internet/painting shoes are your friends then. Other than that, really there are no challenges that any other cosplay doesn’t also have. Just tailor it to you. All cosplayers should do that, as far as I’m concerned. Sometimes it’s better to sacrifice a little bit of accuracy to make sure the thing is wearable and fits well. You can lengthen something here, shorten something there, make a sleeve puffier, a skirt fuller to make sure the overall shape of the garment flatters you. That’s my advice! Sorry this is so long, haha. But if you still have questions, or I haven’t addressed a concern of yours, please do put it in my ask! And if anyone else has suggestions, please do tell us! :)
I love this tumblr!! I'm feeling really inspired to do some Cosplay - I've always hesitated because the costumes are expensive (and I'm fat so it is hard to find them), but by looking at this tumblr, I see that I actually have the elements for a few cosply outfits in my closet. Exciting!!
Hey, thanks!! So glad you’re feeling inspired to do some cosplay! And yeah, cosplay can be expensive, but if you’re creative, it doesn’t have to be! Good luck with the cosplay and I hope you’ll send us a picture of it when you’re done! Thanks again! <3
This is me finally getting around to uploading a picture of my Harley Quinn crossplay. Debuted at animenxt ‘12, making some changes, the shorts need to be redone, a lot, and I’m using a white shirt instead of the red with the tie from now on. First ever cosplay completed, I’m pretty happy with it. Also, that Sailor Jupiter does a Harley too, she said she liked my crossplay. :D
hi, i just wanted to say thanks for this blog, before, i used to think girls as big as me couldnt cosplay without being looked down upon. but after looking at all the lovely women on this page, ive regained some confidence! next year im going to cosplay as pete from kingdom hearts. i can wear cat ears and i love his outfit.
Hi! Thank you! I hate that you used to feel that you couldn’t cosplay without being looked down on. But I’m so glad the blog has helped you regain confidence! You can cosplay whatever you want and cosplay it to your hearts’s content. :) And I love the idea of a Pete cosplay! I hope you’ll submit a picture of it when it’s done! Thanks again!
Helloo! I am lost and can't seem to find a nice place to buy boots for a costume that is for a) Wide feet and b) wide calves that aren't meant for feet the size of boats. I have realitively small feet, but my calves make it impossible to find boots! Do you have any suggestions?
Hey! Welp, unfortunately since it’s June, boots are indeed hard to find in-store right now! D: Usually, I’d suggest places like Torrid and Lane Bryant, and Evans for those in the UK (got some boots I’m obsessed with there). But now, I think your best bet is searching online. There are a number of pretty large shoe sites that sell boots out of season. I’ve found stuff for cosplay on Zappos, onlineshoes, endless . com. On a lot of those, you can edit your search terms to include only a certain size, color, and to include only wide widths. :) You can also always make boot covers if you think it would work with the particular cosplay you’re doing. That way it’d be tailored to the width of your calves. If you want, tell us what cosplay you’re going for! Maybe we can put all our heads together and help you look!
Thank you so much for creating this blog ^_^, It's amazing, And to the people who are so offended by it, why? People are saying your beautiful ! skinny girls and bigger girls should come together and have a giant party because everybody is beautiful in one way or another. cosplay is about fun and if people cant see that then maybe they shouldn't be cosplaying. anyway rant over i really respect you for making this and Much love <3 :)
Thank you! And I SO agree! There should be a giant party where people of every body type ever come and party and tell each other that they’re beautiful! All bodies are beautiful! Also, yes. It does make me sad that some people lose sight of the fact that cosplay should be about fun. Have fun with it, folks! :) Thank you and much love back at ya! <3
I personally want to thank you SO much for being a great fat positive space for fat cosplayers and those who support them. It's a shame when someone can't get past their own hangups and see that fat is not a negative. If someone wants to be taken down from the blog because they do not see themselves as fat, sure ok, but not because they or their cronies think fat = bad and weight loss = good. Thank you for staying positive and being much more level headed in this situation than I.would be.
Thank you! I am so glad that the blog is doing its job as a fat positive space for cosplayers! And yeah, I do think it is unfortunate when people can’t see fat as anything but negative. I always hope that maybe they’ll open their minds, even belatedly, and embrace the fact that fat is beautiful. If not, it is indeed a shame. But we’ll definitely keep doing what we’re doing! Thank you for giving such lovely feedback! Love to hear that the positivity I want to spread is indeed doing just that.
I wanted to reply to the anon post, but I ran out of space, so I thought I would send it here.
If it’s not your place to ask that the photo be removed, then it is technically not your place to submit rude comments under the anon option, right? Have you actually looked through the blog to see what it is really about? It is an empowerment blog, and it has helped a lot of people be more comfortable with their bodies. This blog has definitely helped me. I saw the original Sailor Jupiter post: http://fuckyeahfatpositive.tumblr.com/post/10525680538/ive-been-wanting-to-post-this-picture-for-a-while and it inspired me to pursue my own Sailor Jupiter cosplay, which I then submitted a picture of myself to the blog. I got so many nice comments from people not only at the con but from the blog, that it really helped me accept my body as it is instead of hating it like I have for the past 5 years. I am sorry your friend is upset, but nobody from the blog made fun of her (in fact I am sure she was praised and told she looked beautiful!), but it is also up to your friend to do something about it. I know you want to be a good friend, but sometimes being a good friend is not being rude to people who have accidentally offended your friend, rather, it is supporting your friend and letting them know they have the power to get it removed. The blog mod even agreed to remove it quietly and quickly once she was asked to by the person in question. So please, don’t speak bad about this wonderful blog. It has helped so many people in so many ways.
I just want to say this blog saved me from going on a rampage… I found this website I won’t say any names but it’s deticated to bashIng fat cosplayers… I am sooo sick to death of fat people being crucified for … Existing! It’s like we are not allowed to come out of our houses! I’m fat and I am just fine with it! I love myself and I have tons of friends who love me for me. So this is for all you plus sized cosplayers or just plus sized people in general; you are fine the way you are! They only person you need to worry about loving you for you is yourself! Be confident and people will like you! If Someone seriously dislikes you because of your size then they are not worth it and they should have better things to do! And for all you girls worried about guys liking you I’ve had several male friends tell me bigger chicks are far more attractive! No one likes a bag of bones! Just don’t listen to what others say I know how hard it can be trust me I’ve been made fun of most of my life and for things besides being fat. just don’t let it discourage you! Have fun and be yourself! If no one else loves you for it then I will! :D
